What a repeater actually does

A companion node lets you send and receive messages. A repeater does something different: it sits in one place, usually unattended, and automatically relays other people's traffic further than any single device could reach alone. Repeaters are the backbone of the mesh — the more of them there are, spaced sensibly across the terrain, the more reliable and far-reaching the whole network becomes for everyone using it.

Why Sonoma County needs more of them

Rural ranches, coastal roads, and Mayacamas hillsides sit in some of the county's most persistent cell dead zones — exactly where a single well-placed repeater can connect an entire valley or ridge system. Where to put it

Elevation is the single biggest factor in a repeater's effective range, but a clear line of sight toward the area you want to cover matters just as much as raw height.

Rooftop or mast

The strongest option. A rooftop or a 15–30 ft mast with an unobstructed view in the direction you want to cover can reach roughly 20–25 miles under good conditions.

Barn, fence line, or tree

A practical fit for ranch and vineyard properties — mount on a barn roof, high fence post, or sturdy tree limb with clear solar exposure for the panel through the day.

Balcony or ground level

Fine as a fallback when roof access isn't possible. Ground-level placement typically covers a few miles rather than tens of miles, but still adds useful redundancy to the mesh.

Configuration checklist

Most repeater hardware ships with Meshtastic firmware pre-installed — converting to MeshCore only takes a browser.

Flash MeshCore firmware

Use the MeshCore Web Flasher in your browser — no software install needed, even if the device currently runs Meshtastic.

Choose the USA/Canada preset

This applies the correct 902–928 MHz North America channel plan automatically. Picking the wrong region preset makes your repeater invisible to every other node.

Set the device role to Repeater

In the MeshCore app, switch the node's role from Companion to Repeater so it relays traffic instead of acting as your personal handset.

Join the Public channel

Leave your repeater on the default Public channel so the whole network — not just one private group — benefits from the infrastructure.

Check placement in the Discord first

Before you buy or climb a roof, post your general location and elevation in the Bay Area MeshCore Discord. Experienced operators can help confirm the site fills a real gap, suggest equipment, and flag if another node already covers that area.

Confirm you're visible

Once it's running, check the live regional maps to confirm your repeater shows up, and watch for periodic MeshCore firmware updates via the web flasher.

Elevation is everything for LoRa range. These well-known peaks and parks are strong candidate locations for line-of-sight repeater siting — markers show public landmarks, not confirmed MeshCore infrastructure, and a few are left off because a ham/GMRS repeater already sits nearby (see the existing repeater network).
